Tony Fernandes – Trump’s Asian Apprentice

You’re hired! Airline entrepreneur Tony Fernandes has found yet another venue to make his mark: starring as the chief executive in The Apprentice Asia. He’ll play the Donald Trump role in the TV show, sizing up 12 contestants from across the region as they compete in various tasks and then conducting the climactic job interview that ends with one hopeful going home each week. The applicant left standing after 13 episodes wins the top prize–a one-year contract to work for at least a $100,000 salary at one of Fernandes’ many companies.

There are more than 25 adaptations worldwide of The Apprentice format that was a runaway success when it premiered in the U.S. in 2004 with real estate billionaire Trump presiding over the boardroom. But this is the first time that the show is being made in Asia. Sony Pictures Television Networks Asia, which is co-producing the show with FremantleMedia Asia, says Fernandes is a perfect fit as “the ultimate dreamer and adventurer in business.” The Apprentice Asia is expected to reflect Asian sensibilities, with more tactful confrontations and a focus on inspiration. Sony won’t say whether he, like Trump, will tell failed contestants, “You’re fired!” The show will be filmed primarily in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore and is scheduled to start in May on cable channel AXN in 19 countries across Asia.

Fernandes, No. 21 on this year’s list of Malaysia’s richest, tweeted enthusiastically about his newest sideline: “Some really good candidates for the show. Great tasks.” FORBES ASIA’s 2010 Businessman of the Year is best known for turning around debt-ridden carrier AirAsia and paving the way for budget travel in the region. His diverse portfolio now ranges from a Formula 1 racing team and a British sports car maker to a mobile phone provider. As it happens, Apprentice Asia isn’t Fernandes’ first onscreen role. In 2008 he had a cameo in the Malaysian comedy Cuci, about a team of four adopted brothers who compete in the “Window Washing Olympics” to win a coveted cleaning contract at the 88-floor Petronas Towers.

Contestants
Among the 30,000 applicants from Asia, 100 were called for interviews, before they were cut down to 30, and then to a final 12.
The finalists were then put up in an apartment in Kuala Lumpur for five weeks, where they faced weekly tasks, during which they remained out of contact with everyone. They only have 15-minute phone call to connect to the outside world.The-Apprentice-Asia-contestants
